7 Asian Snacks That Are Better Than Instant Ramen

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Sewanee chapter.

Asian snacks are hard to come by when you live in a small town, but we cannot allow ourselves to be reduced to the tragedy that is bland MSG saturated ramen. There are many spectacular ways to jazz up the ramen in your life, but don’t we deserve more? Whether you prefer sweet or salty, these seven treats will put ramen to shame.

You might be thinking “Where exactly I am supposed to find these?”. Have no fear, all of these goodies are available on Amazon, and with a six month free trial of Amazon Student Prime, upping your snack game has never been easier.

1. Roasted Seaweed

If you like sushi and seaweed salad, you will love roasted seaweed (also known as nori). It has all the saltiness of the potato chips without the unhealthy fats and excessive extra calories. These seaweed snacks are packed with  iodine, iron, and magnesium that will leave you with zero snacking regrets.

2. Instant Miso Soup

What could be better than tangy citrus candies wrapped in rice paper that literally melt on your tongue? This Asian sweet will make you forget all about how much you miss your puppies.

4. Thai Iced Tea

Instead of hunting down a Thai restaurant for Thai Iced Tea, you can make it just as easily in your room. Just use a tea infuser and add a dollop of sweetened condensed milk or coconut milk for a restaurant quality refreshment.

5. Panda Raspberry Licorice Bar

If you’ve been having a really rough semester, you might need a sweet treat. The Hindus thought of licorice as the elixir of life, so shake off your all-nighters with some raspberry goodness.

6. Nori Maki Arare

Rice crackers wrapped in nori are the better cousin of pretzels, enough said.

7. Red Bean Mochi

Natives of Japan have long known the heavenly secrets of mochi, but the rest of the world has only recently caught on. This snack is a sweetened glutenous rice ball filled with anything from ice cream, to soup, and to my personal favorite, sweet red bean paste. This truly is the food of the gods.

RIP Ramen, a new era of Asian snacks is here.

I'm a Junior studying psychology and german, but this next semester I'll be going abroad to India, South Africa, and Brazil to study public health.
