Iron Roost Restaurant Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Skidmore chapter.

If you ever feel like changing up your breakfast scene and getting out of Saratoga, Iron Roost is the place to go. It’s only about 15 minutes away from campus in Ballston Spa (side note: a great town to check out- they have so many antique stores). Most of their food options center around waffles, whether sweet or savory. For example, they offer dishes like the French Toast waffle and the Smoked Salmon waffle wedge. I’ve never heard anyone have a bad experience at Iron Roost, and with plenty of options, everyone can find something they like.

One of the restaurant’s nice touches is that they advertise which products are local, which is a great way to help customers be more food conscious. Another great touch is that they have bookshelves next to some of the tables, where you are encouraged to take a book or donate one to their library. They also have games.

I went with my friends on a Sunday morning. It was a bit crowded, with about a 15-20 minute wait. At Iron Roost, you place your name with a hostess, and then receive a text when it is time to come back and place your order at the counter. Then, you can sit and the food will be served to you.

It can be a bit overwhelming, because there are so many amazing-sounded options and so there is always that classic dilemma for breakfast- do I want something sweet or savory?

I ended up ordering their twist Southwestern Fiesta, though I also added some of my own toppings. My dish consisted of eggs, onions, avocados, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and their homemade hot sauce. Everything, down to their home fries, was amazingly delicious. It was all wrapped up in a waffle, which gave it a nice texture to accompany the ingredients.

My friend ordered a BLT waffle: it had garlic herb mayo, bacon, avocado, and lettuce. Again, the waffle complimented the BLT-like sandwich, because the softness of it helped bring out the flavors and the crunch of the other ingredients.

My other friend couldn’t decide between sweet or savory, and wisely decided to get both. The nice wait staff offered to give order two halves of two different dishes so she could try them both. She ordered blueberry waffles and the chicken salad waffle.

The blueberry waffle was definitely sweet, with warm blueberries sprinkled around and in the waffle. And you can’t go wrong with whipped cream!

The chicken salad waffle was also really good, with the lettuce and tomatoes adding a nice crunch to the softer chicken salad and waffle. I asked her which one she liked better, and she couldn’t decide- she was happy she got both dishes.

Iron Roost also has enticing drink options, like marshmallow or vanilla coffee, smoothies, hot chocolate, and tea.

I know we will be back soon!
