It looks like I’m going to find myself writing one of these every month, and I definitely don’t hate it. Just like last month, I am writing to you from my very cluttered desk full of first year deadlines. And, as evidenced by the existence of this post, I am still procrastinating. YAY!
So now the sun’s actually setting before 3 p.m., and the mix of cold (and this crazy wind), seasonal depression, and stress from deadlines is getting the entire population of St Andrews really down. Not good! So it’s that time again to pull out your wallet, check out the amazing food and drink events for the month, and get happy– because December culminates in lots of holidays, so regardless of what you celebrate, I promise it can only get better from here.
1. #SpoonSnacks
The best thing to ever happen to weary revisioners, Spoon St Andrews is distributing healthy and delicious snacks to students hard at work in the university library. FOR FREE. Seriously. All you need to do is share a Spoon St Andrews post (like this one) on your Facebook with #SpoonSnacks, e-mail Spoon at spoonstandrews@gmail.com with a pick-up time, and get your delicious snacks brought to your desk. And do it ASAP — first come, first served.
2. Society Holiday Dinners
I apologize in advance for what is the most vague event I will ever put on one of these lists, but there’s hundreds of societies, sports, and more available at St Andrews, and there’s no way I know about nor can curate all of them for you. But regardless of whether you’re in Spoon St Andrews (which I hope you are) or the Squirrel Appreciation Society (is that a thing?) grab your friends and celebrate before term ends. Because you definitely deserve a break from revision.
3. Mitchell’s Christmas Menu
Christmas Day Menu, December 25, £45.95 per person // Hogmanay Menu, December 31, £45.95 per person // Mitchell’s Deli, 110 – 112 Market St., St Andrews (t: 01334 466970)
In case you happen to be in town over the holidays, our favorite deli place is offering a fantastic holiday meal service. The fixe prix menu offers three courses including appetizer, a delicious entree with sides, and dessert. Check out the menu here. All places must be reserved in advance. A £10 reservation fee is required.
4. Christmas Cinema: It’s A Wonderful Life
December 15, 3 p.m., £5 including tea/coffee and minced pie // Forgan’s, 110 Market St., Saint Andrews
What better way to forget about exams than to cozy up to a screening of “It’s A Wonderful Life” in Forgan’s? Sip on tea and coffee and snack on minced pie while reflecting on how semester one is almost over (thank goodness).
5. Mitchell’s Christmas Market
December 8, 5 – 8 p.m. // Mitchell’s Deli, 110 – 112 Market St., St Andrews
What’s better than a mid-revision break? You can leave the library for a bit, we promise we’ll save your spot. Embrace something other than your textbooks and give in to holiday cheer, act like you’re 8 years old and give Santa a hug, and sip on mulled wine and cider. You’ll also get to sample some of Mitchell’s limited edition Christmas coffees and cocktails.
6. Compass Box Whisky Tasting
December 3, 7 p.m., £5 members, £10 non-members // Hotel du Vin, 40 The Scores, St Andrews, KY16 9AS
Compass Box, the “too experimental” whisky creator, will be coming to St Andrews thanks to the St Andrews Whisky Society who want to help you drink your revision woes away! What does too experimental even mean? Guess you’ll have to go to see.
We love you, food.
