The 9 Stages of Your Friends Accepting Your Veganism

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Tulane chapter.

There are many reasons for becoming vegan. Whether you’ve always disliked meat and so figured “Why not?”, you just watched a documentary that’ll never let you see your food the same again, or you simply decided to try something new, it’s quite the change.

And while it’s an adjustment for you, it’ll also be an adjustment for your friends (otherwise known as the people you eat obscene amounts of food with). With that said, here are nine things you should expect to happen as your friends come to accept your newfound veganism:

1. They won’t be sure whether they should feel uncomfortable eating meat around you.

Remember — it’s as new to them as it is to you.

2. They’ll completely forget and offer you meat… On multiple occasions.

They’re not trying to spite you (yet), they just think their burger is really dope. It’s coming from the goodness of their heart.

3. They’ll start asking you what foods are vegan and what foods aren’t.

Yes, Oreos are vegan. No, scrambled eggs aren’t. Keep the questions coming.

4. They’ll try to make you jealous of all the food that you can’t eat anymore.

AKA the spiting begins.

5. They’ll try and eat like you for a day…

Because even though they know you do it on the daily, they don’t one-hundred percent believe yet that eating vegan is possible.

6. … But still refuse to try your meat alternatives.

You can’t really get mad, though, because it freaked you out a little at first, too.

7. They’ll envy your decision… Kind of.

In other words, they’ll realize they have mad respect for your decision and kinda wish they could do the same, but then they remember about things like bacon and ice cream.

8. They’ll start cracking jokes on the reg.

The best thing you can do is just laugh (cause chances are the jokes are actually pretty funny).

9. They’ll eventually rejoice in that they don’t have to share their food with you.

And once they realize that, nothing else matters.
