It’s definitely no secret that college students love brunch, especially D.C. students. If you’re looking for a new place to frequent Sunday mornings, Open City is it. A combination of old-school diner food and brand new takes on the classics, this spot seamlessly blends both worlds to create an unforgettable savory experience.
Close to AU, an open-air restaurant with reasonable prices, great food and friendly staff, Open City is sure to become your next go-to brunch place. The restaurant is relaxing and laid back, but its local popularity means that it’s never dull either.
Open City, Tryst, The Coupe and The Diner are all owned by the same people, so fans of one are bound to be fans of another. Open City also serves Tryst Coffee, which has become a local staple.
OC also makes a conscious effort to be vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free friendly, so if you fall under any of those categories, you’ll love their diverse veggie-friendly menu options.
Upon recommendation from some of the restaurant’s employees, I decided to order the Arepas Benedictos, which was a dish of corn arepas (a type of flatbread) topped with pork carnitas, two poached eggs and avocado salsa served with fresh fruit. Some other dishes to check out are the Hashbrown Bowl, the Huevos Rancheros, the Chai Waffle and their signature Open City Royale.
When you leave, be sure to check out their fresh selection of freshly baked/homemade pastries. They have a great pick of desserts, ranging from their Salted Caramel Apple Pie to mini gluten-free carrot cakes. If you have a furry friend, their dog treats are also popular.
For those days that you really just don’t feel like going to TDR, this is a perfect place to sit back, do some work, and enjoy some great food. The animal crackers served with their hot drinks definitely don’t hurt either.
