I seriously believe there is no better combination than fried chicken and doughnuts. Sure, peanut butter and jelly are good, but there’s nothing that can beat the salty crispiness of fried chicken alongside the sweetness of a doughnut. Here in DC, there’s no place that does doughnuts and chicken better than Astro Doughnuts, who we will be lucky enough to have here for Georgetown Day this Friday.
Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern, owners of Astro, are lifelong friends and DC natives who saw a void in the restaurant scene that they thought needed filling. As Jeff explained to me, they identified chicken and doughnuts as something “they wanted to do and felt passionate about.” Today, they are critically acclaimed for their inventive flavors as well as their precise execution.
As for Jeff, his favorite item from the menu is the Fried Chicken BLT, which is pretty much just what it sounds like (but makes me want to get my butt over there real quick and inhale one).
Their most popular and best-reviewed item is arguably the creme brûlée doughnut, pictured above, but you can’t go wrong with any of their flavors. Flavors include maple bacon, nutella, Brooklyn blackout and many more. Not to mention their chicken, which you can get on its own, or in multiple sandwich forms.
It’s their first time bringing their food truck here to Georgetown, and they have even decided to make us our own custom Georgetown Day doughnut. Get excited, people! Expect all the awesome flavor with the added bonus of our school colors.
