As the summer wraps up and classes begin, everyone from incoming freshmen to rising seniors is making their way back to campus, including me. As students haul their Target bags into dorms, one universal struggle returns: figuring out what snacks will actually get you through the semester. Convenience and practicality inform most of my snacking decisions, and while I’ve always relied on dining halls for meals, moving off campus has made me nostalgic for the days of my perfectly curated dorm room snack cart, and now I’m here to help you build yours.
What factors are important when picking out dorm snacks?
As I’ve scrolled through TikToks, comment sections, and spoken to my friends, a few major factors kept coming up when deciding on go-to dorm snacks. The most frequent one? Grabbable. Anyone who has spent even a week on a college campus knows that life gets a little bit chaotic. Some days you are quietly rushing out of the room to make it to that 8 a.m. lab without waking up your roommate, and others you’re staying up late to study for an exam long past dining hall hours. In these moments, you need a reliable, filling snack to get you through class or a little boost to keep you sharp while you study.
Another key element is health benefits, mostly whether a snack is protein-rich and energy-sustaining. Even if you’re not someone who thinks about nutrition every day, having something that keeps you full and focused is a lifesaver during busy weeks.
So what snacks fit these standards?
After clicking on every video and asking my friends, four must-haves that popped up again and again: granola bars, fruit snacks, rice cakes, and microwave popcorn. One TikToker, Lily Higgins, said, “Sometimes in the morning I didn’t have enough time to go to the dining hall, so I would grab some granola bars on my way to class.” As someone who has spent the past three years relying on peanut butter Cliff bars as a way to get me through long classes before lunch or rainy mornings when I don’t feel like walking to the dining hall, I can confirm that a granola bar you love is practically a necessity.
Because healthy options are not exactly my forte, I asked my friend Jackie, a D1 college lacrosse player, what her go-to snacks have been as a student-athlete. She listed two options that I have also found to be very common on TikTok: fruit snacks and rice cakes. “Fruit snacks because they are quick sugars and carbs, which are good for brain and muscle function, so I’ll eat those before an early workout or during a long class,” she said. “And I really like mini rice cakes with peanut butter… pop them in a bag like a makeshift Oreo to get a light snack that’s easy and filled with carbs and protein.”
Microwave popcorn also deserves a shoutout. It’s the comforting smell in the halls that signals warmth, well-rounded movie nights, late-night study sessions, or those evenings when you want something salty but don’t want to leave your room.
So what should you stock up on?
At the end of the day, the best dorm snacks are the ones that fit your routine, whether you’re a student‑athlete grabbing quick carbs before practice, an oversleeper sprinting to class with a granola bar, or someone who just needs a little treat during a late‑night study session. College is chaotic, so your snacks should make life easier, not harder: granola bars for rushed mornings, fruit snacks for a quick burst of energy, rice cakes for a light but filling bite, and microwave popcorn for the classic dorm comfort. As you settle into your room this semester, think of your snack cart as a tiny survival kit stocked with things you actually enjoy!
