The craze started thanks to chef Ruth Graves Wakefield, who created the dessert at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. When baking butterscotch cookies, Wakefield ran out of nuts due to a shortage and decided to substitute with chocolate. She eventually published the recipe in her cookbook under the title “Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie.” Sales of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate bars skyrocketed as a result, and with Wakefield’s permission, the company printed her recipe on the back of their wrappers.
