A Classic Boston Treat

If you have ever heard anything about New England, then you know we have a lot of niches– clam chowder, lobsta’ rolls–  and if you head into Massachusetts, you’ll find the Boston Cream Doughnut. Derived from an equally delicious yet lesser known Boston Cream Pie, this doughnut represents what Americans might do best: creativity and crazy food.

To do this doughnut justice, I tried 4 different kinds from around Boston. Whether you’re looking for a cheap snack, a decandacy, something not too sweet, or that classic doughnut flavor, I have a doughnut for you. These are my ranked Boston Cream doughnuts based on taste, and how close it is to my ideal doughnut.

4. Blackbird

While I have the sweet tooth of a toddler, I know not everyone does. This doughnut was a toned-down version of the Boston Cream, more focused on chewiness and filling. It’s great for a nice bite without the “I’m gonna get a cavity” feeling. Yet, this doughnut was more toned down, and did not appeal as much to my giant sweet tooth. But, this makes it a great option for those who love a dessert that’s not too indulgent or heavy. For its higher price at $4.40, it’s definitely a splurge; But for those who like something chewy and less sweet, this one’s worth it for you.

3. Dunkin’ Donuts

Moving on to a nostalgic classic, this “donut” is sweet, well-frosted, and budget friendly. If you don’t like too much filling and want more of a snack, this one is for you. For my fellow lifelong Bostonians, or those adjacent, this Boston Cream offers sweet nostalgia; it reminds me of snowy mornings, rainy afternoons and frigid evenings made better from this one simple treat. However, it’s small, not as soft as bakery doughnuts, and can be on the denser side. But for only $1.59, and over 80 locations in Boston, I definitely consider it to be a good deal.

2. Union Square Donuts

This doughnut caught me off guard in the best way possible. The frosting was rich, filling, and left me full and satisfied. This doughnut was definitely a luxury; at $4.95, it is the most expensive doughnut I tried! Whether or not it’s worth it depends on your own taste. If you want a higher end doughnut with more of a dessert than breakfast vibe, Union Square should be your next stop.

1. Kane’s

Out of all the doughnuts, this was the only one to check all of my boxes. This doughnut is sweet, has great frosting, and is incredibly fluffy. When I think of a classic doughnut, I think Kane’s– great for a sweet breakfast on a lazy sunday. For $3.50, this is definitely a reasonably priced doughnut that I would go back for time and time again.

Final Thoughts

After an amazing day of eating all these doughnuts, I found that there are so many more varieties than just a traditional cake doughnut. There was the brioche style at Blackbird, a budget friendly bite at Dunkin’, the luxurious bite at Union Square Doughnuts, and the classic sweet treat from Kane’s. I also found that any day is made better by a doughnut, no matter the style. I hope this ranking helps you find the best doughnut to satisfy your craving.
