Why Are People Freaking Out Over The New Costco Chocolate Cake?

Costco is the place to go for bulk toilet paper, $5 Rotisserie chicken, cheap food court hot dogs, and apparently, chocolate cake. Recently the internet has been abuzz with talk about Costco’s “new” chocolate cake, which, like all things from Costco, is gigantic. And it turns out that this cake might not be new at all but instead an old, beloved chocolate cake brought back to life 5 years after it was discontinued. People are super excited…and upset. The great Costco chocolate cake controversy has arisen as the cake appears to be lacking key decorations and isn’t as good a deal as the original was.

What is Costco’s new cake?

Costco’s new (or should we reinvented?) chocolate cake doesn’t have a fancy nickname, just being called the Chocolate Fudge Cake. But what’s important is that it is 5 and a half pounds of chocolate cake complete with multiple layers and chocolate frosting. And allegedly, it’s a slightly-altered revival of a fan-favorite cake from 5 years ago.

Why are people excited about it?

Back in 2020, which is somehow 5 years ago, there existed a chocolate cake with a now mythical reputation — the All-American Chocolate Cake. Now it appears to have been brought back as the Chocolate Fudge Cake, as people are claiming they’re essentially the same. User @costcohotfinds, a big fan of the original cake, bought the new one to test for herself. After trying it she said, “I’m not convinced it’s not the same cake just without the chocolate shavings…Exactly, it’s almost the exact same cake.” A commenter claiming to work in the Costco Bakery, @pastriesbylydia, claimed that it’s the same cake.

Tons of commenters were jumping for joy at the revelation of the cake’s revival, reminiscing about the old cake and looking forward to buying the new one. User @empurri rejoiced, saying, “Yay!!! We used to love that cake. Can’t wait to try this one!” while another, @phyllisconnachtpa, said “Ok fine I’ll get a Costco membership.” Good enough to buy a Costco membership just for a single item? Just how good is this cake?

What’s the controversy about the new cake?

Not everything about the new Chocolate Fudge Cake is all well and good, however. Many people are upset at the lack of shavings, with user @Jsin_Hopsing saying, “I need the shavings. Bring back the shavings. Where are my shavings??” and user @whatsit.toyuh saying, “I need the shavings 😩😩😩 it’s what makes the cake!” Apparently the shavings were really important.

And then there’s the matter of shrinkflation. The All-American Chocolate cake was apparently 7 pounds for only $17, while the Chocolate Fudge Cake is not even 6 pounds and costs $25. That’s a pretty royal ouch. Less banging cake for your buck definitely hurts. But that doesn’t seem to be stopping everybody, so really only you can decide whether or not Costco’s new Chocolate Fudge Cake is worth it.
