I’m always looking for cool and refreshing meal options, and sushi is one of my go-tos. Roll Call in KTown is the perfect place for this, offering a variety of rolls, bento boxes, bowls, drinks, and more in a casual, laid-back setting. (Address: 3183 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 186, Los Angeles, CA 90010)
We ordered four items: the Double Trouble roll, the Cheating Boyfriend roll, the Shrimp Pimp roll, and a Thai tea.
First up, the Double Trouble roll: a salmon tempura and avocado roll topped with salmon sashimi, jalapeño slices, sweet mayo, eel sauce, and sesame seeds. A dream for all the salmon lovers out there, this roll combines two distinct but delicious forms: warm, crispy salmon tempura and cool, buttery salmon sashimi. The tempura was cooked perfectly–crispy on the outside, tender on the inside–while the creamy avocado added a contrasting texture. On top, the salmon sashimi was tender and fatty, almost melting in my mouth, and tasted high-quality and fresh. The jalapeño added a nice kick, helping to cut through the creamy avocado and fatty sashimi. This was my personal favorite out of the three rolls we tried.
Next, the Cheating Boyfriend roll: a shrimp tempura, spicy imitation crab, and avocado roll topped with grilled eel and spicy eel sauce. This one is for all the eel lovers out there. Like the Double Trouble, this roll layers textures and flavors well. Inside, the tempura was spot-on once again, except this time with shrimp. The spicy imitation crab and smooth avocado complemented the tempura well, providing a base for the star of this roll: the eel. The eel was rich, tender, and smoky, glazed with a savory, sweet soy-based glaze caramelized to perfection.
Finally, the Shrimp Pimp: a shrimp tempura, avocado, and cucumber roll topped with ebi shrimp, tempura flakes, spicy mayo, eel sauce, and sesame seeds. Similar to the shrimp tempura inside the cheating boyfriend roll, this shrimp tempura was cooked well. The cucumber was a great addition, adding a fresh crunch that brightened the roll. While the inside of the roll had great texture and flavor, I found that the plain ebi shrimp on top didn’t absorb the spicy mayo and eel sauce well. The tempura flakes and sesame seeds did add a nice crunch, though. Still, the fillings of the roll were tasty and satisfying.
We also tried the Thai tea, which was sweet, creamy, and lightly spiced, with hints of vanilla and a slight earthiness. The drink was not watered down at all, which I appreciated–it struck a good balance between rich and refreshing.
Roll Call’s atmosphere is perfect for a casual meal with friends, family, or alone. You order at the kiosk first before sitting down, and the nearly floor-to-ceiling glass windows let in plenty of natural light. Bonus: they also validate parking!
Overall, I would highly recommend Roll Call. I’ll be coming back soon to try more of their menu, such as the bento boxes and rice bowls. Whether you’re looking for a cool bite during the summer heat or seeking to explore bold roll combinations, Roll Call has it all.
