A Guide To The Perfect Rot Day

Between the end of the semester and holiday shopping, December is a stressful time of year, and you know what that calls for: a good rot day. If you aren’t familiar with the practice, rot days are completely dedicated to vegging out, binge-watching a tv show, and eating all your favorite snacks. Whether you’re rotting in preparation for the festivities or recovering from your holiday-hangover, this is how you can make the most of it.

Must-Have Bevs

It’s your day to rot, so choose drinks that make you feel good! Personally, I like to follow the three drink rule: one drink that’s good for you, one drink that’s fun, and one drink that’s caffeinated. Naturally, the holiday season has a lot of salty foods, so you may want to opt for one of those drinks to be water. For fun drinks, I tend to lean toward prebiotic sodas like OLIPOP and Poppi. Perfect for a Christmas rot day, both brands have winter collections out now, featuring new yeti-themed cans and a cranberry fizz flavor respectively. Of course, it’s winter time, so a nice hot chocolate or warm cider can never hurt either!

As for caffeinated beverages, Starbucks and Dunkin’ both have Christmas menus in full swing. You can try Starbucks’ peppermint mocha or a Caramel Brulée Latte, or one of Dunkin’s cookie butter creations. Regardless, food delivery services — like Grubhub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats — are your friend on rot days. Staying on the couch is totally worth the couple extra dollars in delivery fees.

The Best Snacks

Simple snacks are typically the best for rot day. Think of something bite-sized, that you don’t need to heat up, and can just throw in a bowl (or eat straight out of the bag). We’re going for variety here, so choose a sweet snack, a savory snack, and a fruit for balance. To keep with the Christmas theme, treats like the Trader Joe’s Festively Shaped Pretzels or some Mini Gingerbread People will check all of your boxes for tastiness, convenience, and holiday cheer.

What do I wear for my Christmas rot day?

Rot day is all about being comfortable. Put on your favorite pair of Christmas pajamas, a cozy pair of sweatpants, or a cute pair of fuzzy socks and remember: rot day isn’t a fashion show.

What do I do during rot day?

Well, the simple answer is rot! Sleep in, put on a movie, take a bath  — whatever will make you feel your best! If you’re looking for some more stimulating activities but still want to stay in, crafts like vision boards and journaling are perfect for relaxing and getting ready for the new year.

Whatever your holiday season looks like this year, you deserve some time to kick up your feet, so enter 2025 the right way with a Christmas rot day.
