Kenzoku Mazesoba: A Taste of Japan In Boston

The Japanese word “Kenzoku” translates to “Family” in English, and that’s exactly the feeling you get walking into Kenzoku Mazesoba noodle shop in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. Amidst its bustling streets located on a quiet side corner of the building this traditional Japanese restaurant is serving up flavor-packed noodle dishes all evening long. Though they have a small menu and an even smaller location, that doesn’t stop them from creating comfort dishes with a  taste that reminds you of the heartwarming feeling of family.

Defining our Terms: Mazesoba

What is mazesoba, you may be wondering? Well, “maze” means “to mix” and soba means “noodle” in Japanese. So, essentially, mazesoba is a traditional Japanese brothless noodle dish. Usually, the plate is composed of a thick-saucey base with fresh noodles above, finished with a variety of toppings. To eat, the diner should mix it all  together to create a unique flavor profile of ingredients to coat the noodles. At the end of the meal, a small bowl of white rice is offered to soak up the remaining sauce. 

Soba is Served

As a first timer, I was intimidated by the generous bowl of authentic ingredients in front of me, not knowing where to start. Luckily, the environment of the restaurant was conducive to an easy, pleasurable dining experience. Not only were there clear instructions on the menu for how to enjoy the dish, but there were attentive restaurant staff members there to assist with anything. Not even a moment after I finished my glass of water, there would be a waiter nearby to refill it. When I wanted to add a $2 matcha to my meal (an outstanding deal offered when ordering a bowl of the soba), the waiter came by swiftly to drop it off. There was no lack of efficiency and care when being served.

Additionally, though the space is small, the ambiance of the restaurant lends itself beautifully to the traditional dining experience. There’s some beautiful Japanese decor that takes on a modern, clean aesthetic mirroring the careful composition of the dishes which, too, appeared beautifully decorated with ingredients that popped in color. I was amazed that even in such a small area, the restaurant never felt cramped, rushed, or noisy. From the environment to the service, the restaurant sets up their customers for success from the moment they step into the door. 

Let’s Talk Food

What really makes this restaurant the one to visit if you’re looking for an authentic Japanese meal is the food itself. I ordered the Tan Tan Mazesoba which came with mixed greens, minced pork, a poached egg, garlic sauce, scallions, onion, and chili oil, and I paired this with an iced matcha latte. From one flavor or texture to the next, every ingredient in this dish worked harmoniously to create a depth of umami and spice in every bite. The sauce was perfectly thickened to coat the noodles served al dente. The surprising crisp crunch of the greens paired wonderfully with the smoothness of the soba and sauce. Finally, the chewiness of the pork added the final touch of texture to this flawless dish. The flavors you’ll encounter at Kenzoku Mazesoba will be unlike any other available in Boston, and all at a reasonable price if you’re willing to spend a little more for some quality food. It’s not all expensive – the $2 matcha is an incredible deal that you won’t find anywhere else in the city! And, as a self-proclaimed matcha connoisseur myself, I must say it is some of the best I’ve ever had. It had an incredibly powerful flavor to balance perfectly with a sweet cold foam. Additionally, the drink was creamy and incredibly smooth, making it the unsung hero of the restaurant’s menu.

Final Thoughts

To end the evening off, diners will be treated to a refreshing hard fruit candy accompanying their check, which is a satisfying conclusion to this overall quick yet quality dining experience. I would personally recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a warm comfort meal or to experience what it means to immerse yourself in a culture through its food. Any option on the menu will be one you remember for a lifetime, so be sure to go to Kensoku Mazesoba  surrounded by friends or family. Even if you choose to go alone, you’ll be sure to feel right at home.
