For most college students, a quick, tasty, and cheap snack doesn’t end up being a healthy one. Even when I try to eat healthier snacks from brands claiming not to break the budget, I usually end up with a bunch of stale granola bars in my kitchen that will never be eaten past the first bite.

For a quick bite between classes that will actually fill you up, what’s a hungry Hoya to do?

Sweet Nothings, a snack brand on a “quest to build a better bite,” is trying to answer that question.

Founded by Beth Porter, a mom struggling to find easy, yummy, and healthy snacks to feed her kids, Sweet Nothings prides itself on their nutritious and plant-based ingredients lists. Sweet Nothings creates their signature spoonable smoothies, dessert pops, peanut butter bites, Acai bowls, and squeezable smoothies using only real fruits and nuts.

The Sweet Nothings team sent us a box of their Peanut Butter Bites to see if they’d do the trick at snack time, and they did not disappoint.

Each pack comes with two “bites” (in my research I found each bite was more like two bites, but we’ll allow it).  Although that may not sound like a lot, each bite is chock full of protein and fills up the post lunch, predinner gap easily.

All the bites are based with dates, oats, flax, sea salt, and a peanut butter filling. The consistency is chewy and soft, giving each bite a melt in your mouth feeling.

I started off with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites, which add cacao to the base ingredients, with the usual peanut butter center. Usually, I am not a fan of dates, but I found that the dates and oats complimented the cacao well, and the peanut butter added a nice richness. This is not a sweet snack, but the flavor is mild enough where it’s not bitter either, and overall was quite tasty.

Next, I tried the Apple Cinnamon Peanut Butter Bites. These were definitely my favorite of the group. The peanut butter takes a bit of a backseat to let the apple strut to center stage, adding a burst of flavor and natural sweetness alongside the smooth cinnamon. As fall rolls around and I search for apple crisp EVERYTHING, these bites remind me of my favorite autumnal treats.

Lastly, I tried the Oatmeal Raisin Peanut Butter Bites. These were more like a classic granola bar, in chewy ball form. While slightly less exciting to the palate than the others, the oatmeal and raisins paired well with the hint of cinnamon.

Overall, Sweet Nothings may be winning a place in my dorm snack collection. If you’re curious to try them, use our Buy One Get One Free deal, and make them part of your feel- good snack repertoire!
