How to Eat Like You’re Traveling for Spring Break Without Getting Off Your Ass

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Chapel Hill chapter.

It’s all your friends can talk about- a week in Cancun, skiing in the Alps, or an all-inclusive cruise with the sorority. Whatever their destination, everyone’s got their countdown started for spring break. However, if you’re like me and dreading spending the week in Hometown, USA with the parental units, there’s no reason to be bummed.

You can still have the vacation of a lifetime, without ever leaving the comfort of your home. Here’s a daily food guide for you to follow in order to make each day of your spring break feel like a different vacation. Bon appétit, you savvy traveler.

Monday: Hawaii

Start the week out on island time and have a luau-for-one. Grilled chicken kebabs with tropical elements like pineapple will whisk you away to Hawaii for the afternoon. Pair them with a piña colada, then throw on a lei and kick off your shoes.

Tuesday: Cancun

That’s right, it’s taco Tuesday. But you don’t have to cross the border to have a fiesta today. Follow this recipe for spicy carnitas tacos paired with chips and guacamole. If you’re of age, and of the Jimmy Buffet mindset, whip up a frozen margarita for some added fun.
Hey, it’s probably 5 o’clock in Cancun anyway. Don’t forget to pour some out for all your homies at Señor Frogs having the wildest time of their lives.

Wednesday: Aspen, Colorado

Skiing requires a lot of energy, and thinking about skiing is almost as taxing. You’ll need a large mug of hot cocoa with whipped cream after hitting the mental slopes. Add a stack of fluffy waffles and real maple syrup for the complete ski lodge effect. If any of your friends didn’t think you were the adventurous, outdoorsy type, they certainly do now.

Thursday: The United Kingdom

Some of your friends’ families might be whisking them off on a fabulous European vacation, but you know that “crossing the pond” actually entails a 9 hour flight. Instead, have your own afternoon tea party, complete with cucumber sandwiches and petit fours. Put on some British tunes to set the mood. If the first British musician you thought of was Harry Styles… I’m right there with you. Sorry Mick.

Friday: Antarctica

Go to a place where NONE of your friends can one-up you. Oh you went to Miami? That’s nice, but I went to a continent you’ll probably never visit (the reality of the trip can be our secret). To feel like you’re hanging with the penguins, try these adorably-apt penguin cake pops. And when you realize that these pops didn’t satiated your hunger, just order a large pizza. Hopefully delivery to the South Pole doesn’t cost extra.

Saturday: Panama City Beach

Alright, it’s the weekend. Time to have the classic college spring break experience. Put on your swim shorts, a neon tank top, a backwards baseball cap, and maybe even a fanny pack. Then, instead of hitting the beach with thousands of co-eds, set up your beach chair in the backyard, put on the LMFAO Pandora station, and grill yourself some burgers. They’re as all-American as the #SpringBreak2K15 t shirt you’d be wearing at PCB, but without the sand in your buns.

Sunday: The Road Trip

Spring Break

To round out this crazy week of pseudo-traveling, pretend your car ride back to school is actually an epic cross-country road trip. Hop in the family mini-van, head on over to the nearest gas station and stock up for the journey with an extra-large Coke, some Twizzlers, and an aggressively large bag of Chex Mix. And as you’re pulling out of the parking lot, don’t forget to whine “Mom, I gotta pee”.
