The Best Fish and Chips You Can Find in New England

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BU chapter.

When the mood for greasy, sinful, delicious food comes overcomes you, instead of reaching for a boring burger dig into a plate of fish and chips instead. New England, known for its hearty beans and chowder, is also renowned for its fish and chips. Being from the Northeast and raised by a proud New England-bred Dad, I’ve developed a fondness for the fried dish.

Loving it so much, I’ve done my homework and tried varieties all over the world, from Philadelphia, to California and even England. However, the best I have ever had, hails from Ye Olde English Fish & Chips in Woonsocket, RI.

Celebrating its 92nd anniversary this year is just one indication of how quality stands the test of time. Still sporting the same black and white tiles on the floor, the same batter recipe and a hometown feel, this landmark in food is the perfect weekend trip for foodies and fried food lovers alike.

Eat-in or take-out, customers can choose from a range of chowders, fish cakes, fish platters and (another local favorite) clam cakes. Everything on the menu is so good it’s wrong, but oh so right. If you go, you must order a classic fish and chips dish. Served simply and generously on a white plate, sit down with napkins at the ready. If you really want to be a New-Englander, pour some malt vinegar over your fish to get the full impact of flavor.

I live for the crunch my fork makes as I tear into the fresh cod or haddock, taking a bite into Ye Olde English tradition.
