No matter how much dinner you eat, there’s always room for dessert. Be it a donut, a chocolate truffle cake, a waffle, gulab jamun, anything. Just the mention of desserts can make ones mouth water.
However, are you bored of eating the same type of dessert everytime? Because I, for one, really am. Now it so happens, that there are times when I crave for dessert, but I don’t want to eat things I’ve eaten a million times already. So I looked up desserts from around the world that will take some effort to find and devour, but trust me, the hardwork will be totally worth it.
Here’s a list of 10 famous desserts from different countries around the world. Hunt them down, share and enjoy!
1. Baklava, Turkey
Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. A traditional Turkish sweet, you can find it in almost every gift shop that sells baskets of sweets and chocolates.
It is filling, and absolutely delicious. A bestseller during the festive season in European countries, there are a number of varieties of Baklawa gifted, shared and devoured.
2. Cinnamon Rolls, Sweden
Heavenly rolls made of flour, cinnamon, sugar and butter, they are a hit not only in most of North America and North Europe, but in the rest of the whole world as well. One of my absolute favourites, cinnamon rolls taste as yummy as a dream with a molten chocolate center filling topped with ice cream or whipped cream. Has your mouth started watering already? This is a definite MUST EAT, because once you’ve tasted it, you are going to thank the Swedish for the rest of your life!
3. Banoffee Pie, England
Banoffee pie or “bananoffe” is an English dessert pie made from bananas, cream and toffee, combined either on a pastry base or one made from crumbled biscuits and butter. It’s creamy, rich, filling and some versions of the recipe even have coffee or chocolate or both! What else does one really need?
4. Creme Brulee, France
Creme brulee, also known as burnt cream, crema catalana, or Trinity cream is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a contrasting layer of hard caramel. It is normally served at room temperature. The custard base is traditionally flavored with vanilla, but can have a variety of other flavorings.
5. Apple Pie, America
I’m sure you must’ve heard of this one, if not tasted it yet.
An apple pie, regional variation apple tart, is a fruit pie, in which the main filling ingredient is apple. It is, on occasion, served with whipped cream or ice cream on top, or alongside cheddar cheese. The richness of the apple sauce can only be commented upon once you actually dig into a pie. A grandma’s favourite in books and movies, this is one dessert that’s both light and traditional.
6. Gelato, Italy
This one’s for all those ice cream lovers like me out there.
Gelato is Italian ice cream. It is made with a base of milk, cream, and sugar, and flavored with fruit and nut purees and other flavourings. It is generally lower in fat, but higher in sugar, than other styles of ice cream. A proper gelato ice cream parlour will serve you the dessert with fruit and nut toppings.
7. Picarones, Peru
Picarones is a Peruvian dessert that originated in Lima during the viceroyalty. It is somewhat similar to bunuelos, a type of doughnut brought to the colonies by Spanish conquistadors. Its principal ingredients are squash and sweet potato.
8. Mochi, Japan
Mochi is Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain japonica glutinous rice. The rice is pounded into paste and molded into the desired shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki.
9. Tiramisu, Italy
Another Italian dessert, this one is full of cream and coffee. It is light, yummy and commonly available in almost every café. There are Tiramisu pastries, jars, cakes, puddings, and much more. It is made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, flavoured with cocoa.
10. Crepes, Paris
Because a life without Crepes isn’t a life worth living. A crepe is a type of very thin pastry, usually made from wheat flour or buckwheat flour. Found commonly in western countries on stalls on the roadside, this dessert is full of different types of fillings that you yourself can choose. Be it chocolate, or blueberry puree, or maple sauce, or anything that suits your taste buds, fill your crepe with it and enjoy the sweet deliciousness.
