5 Pathetic But Very Real Eating Habits You’ll Find on College Campuses

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Miami (OH) chapter.

Whether it’s your newfound love of taquitos for breakfast or your random roommate who puts mayonnaise on everything, college is a place where eaters of all sorts live together in somewhat peaceful harmony. However, that doesn’t mean that quirky eating habits shouldn’t go entirely unnoticed or unappreciated. Here’s some strange things you might find on campus:

1The Soup Addict

Okay, this is actually me… Since college began I have taken to eating soup as often as two or three times a day. Soup isn’t really identified as an “entree” food very often, and finding good quality chowder or bisque on a college campus isn’t easy. But if you find a soup that you love it’s a quick, easy, and relatively healthy choice. I realize it’s not normal to eat soup for breakfast, but I’m an addict and I admit I have a problem.

2. The Condiment Connoisseur

With chicken wings, chips, and pizza as college diet staples, it’s important to utilize junk food’s partner in crime: the condiment. There are those who put hot sauce on everything and slather pepperoni pizza in barbecue sauce. Peanut butter on noodles? Fine. Though some of it may seem weird, it’s better to just accept those and their strange dipping choices.

3. The Dining Hall Indulgent

When I venture inside my dining hall, I am often in awe of what people put on their plate. For example, one day I watched a kid slather chili on top of grilled chicken and then top that with cucumbers. Then there’s the person who thought it was a good idea to layer pickles with peanut butter in a sandwich. When eating at the dining hall, be wary of other’s choices. But you never know, one of them may actually be pretty tasty.

4. The Dinner Breakfaster

We’ve all done it. You open the fridge in the morning, you grab last night’s Mexican, finish it, and maybe contemplate going to the gym later to work it off. However, some people are on a whole other level. There is a fine line in the dinner for breakfast world. Sure, there are those who enjoy the occasional slice of pizza before class. But warming up that fettucine Alfredo from Sunday dinner at 9 am is a little too far.

5. The King/Queen of Carry Out

College is all about ordering food at 3 am with your friends. But what about those people who wanna order food, like, all the time? I’m not talking once a week. Some people on campus just refuse to eat the food their parents are literally required to pay for. Instead, they’ll order a week’s worth of Chinese and slowly chip away at their stash until Sunday rolls around and it’s time to place a new order.
