One of the many perks of being a student at Virginia Tech is the food. In addition to campus food being ranked #1 by the Princeton Review three times, students are lucky enough to have delicious spots to dine around Blacksburg as well. Unfortunately, over the summer we all miss these local favorites while we’re away. Here are some of Blacksburg’s dining gems students most anticipate returning to in the fall.

Food is a huge part of Virginia Tech students’ lives, and everyone has their own favorite. Personally, it is undeniable that Thai food is one of my favorites, and sadly my hometown doesn’t have a good place to satisfy these cravings. Thankfully, Café de Bangkok has great quality dishes, and so this was my first meal upon returning to Tech this fall.

What to order: Pad Thai. This classic never disappoints. Add your protein of choice and get it as spicy as you like.

Although it is a chain restaurant, Cabo Fish Taco is undoubtedly a Blacksburg favorite. With a casual atmosphere, this place embodies the college town feel. They offer unique seafood taco options and diverse appetizers and sides.

What to order: Lemon-grilled Shrimp Tacos. Recommended by student Laura Jacobs, this dish is popular amongst many.

Sake House

A go-to sushi spot is always a must, and Sake House delivers great quality rolls. They offer a large list of nigiri, sashimi, maki, and special rolls, as well as great deals. They are also a perfect takeout option. Senior student Brianne Donovan not only went to Sake House for her first meal back in Blacksburg this fall, but she said, “I have already ordered Sake House sushi twice since I have been back!”

What to order: Special maki and nigiri. Try a variety of rolls to get a little taste of everything.

Blacksburg has no shortage of international food. Marco & Luca provides a place to savor Chinese dumplings for when you are craving something a little different. Located in the University Mall shopping center, it is also a great place to stop if you’re at the Math Empo.

What to order: Sweet and Sour Spicy Cold Noodles. Student Anna Walther says this is the dish she missed most while she was away from Blacksburg.

On weekend mornings walking down College Avenue, you can see people milling around and sitting on curbs waiting for a spot at Gillie’s for brunch. This vegetarian spot also offers seafood dishes, and patrons have made it clear that the food is worth the wait.

What to order: Spanish Frittata – Topped with spinach, artichokes, and tomatoes, student Marra Sherrier swears this is the way to go.

This classic gastropub offers a large list of craft beer on draft, as well as great burgers, making it the perfect place to hit up on game day. The menu also features fresh local ingredients.

What to order: Smoked Gouda, Spinach & Artichoke Dip. This is a must, whether as an appetizer or as a snack with a couple beers.

622 North

When you’re thinking of eating in a college town, your mind probably goes more to sports bars and less so to gourmet restaurants. 622 North breaks this expectation and features an eclectic menu and extensive craft cocktail and beer list, in addition to housing a wine bar. Their unique menu items can only be found in Blacksburg, and that is what makes this place special, as well a nice alternative to the usual go-to spots for money saving efforts.

What to order: The daily special. It always features seasonal ingredients for an exceptional dish.
