Thanksgiving. The holiday solely dedicated to eating until you’re about to explode, and then eating some more. But, if you find yourself away from the USA on this magical Thursday in November, here are some things you can do to make the day a little less lonely.
Find Some Americans
Here at St Andrews, Americans are not too hard to find. But, if you happen to find yourself without any fellow Americans around, start looking as soon as possible. Try to see if Facebook can help you out, or ask some people if they’ve seen anyone with an American flag hanging in their room. Honestly, if you look, you’ll always find one.
Have a Potluck
As far as the kitchen goes, a potluck is probably your best bet. This way, everyone is able to bring their own dishes, and you won’t feel stressed having 15 people trying to cook in your kitchen at the same time.
Call Mom for Recipes
Saddened by the fact that your family will not be together for this food-filled holiday, your family will probably be glad to help you prepare some of your Thanksgiving favorites. Whether its your mom’s famous stuffing, your aunt’s pumpkin pie, or your grandma’s secret cheesy potatoes, you will most likely be able to recreate the recipe with a little practice.
If you cannot find some of the ingredients in the country you’re studying in, try experimenting with something similar (before the big day, of course). Who knows, it could lead to something even better than the original. Worst comes to worst, check and see if Amazon has the ingredients, or see if you can kindly guilt your family into sending you some.
Every family seems to celebrate Thanksgiving a little differently. By combining a little bit of your Thanksgiving traditions with some of the traditions from your other American friends, you can get a feel for what other people do for Thanksgiving in other parts of the US, as well as getting to try some new and awesome foods. To mix it up even further, invite some people from other countries and have them bring a traditional holiday dish.
Find a Way to Watch (American) Football
I mean honestly, is it really Thanksgiving without football? Yahoo just started live streaming NFL games, so make sure to watch the game, even if it’s at a really random time (because, you know, time change).
Cook Waaaaaay Too Much
Cook so much that everyone has enough to have leftovers for at least three days afterwards. A Thanksgiving without leftovers is just a nice dinner on a Thursday.
