This Spicy Vegan Black Bean Burger Is A Fiesta In Your Mouth

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Fordham chapter.

Flavor is a major key when making a black bean burger, because if you fall short in the flavor department, the veggie burger you tried so hard to make may end up turning into a big ball of flavorless mush.  Trust me, this black bean burger does not disappoint, as it is chock-full of spices that come together in a beautiful fiesta of happiness.

    First, Mix Up Your Spices

Mix up the first eight ingredients into a beautiful symphony of incredible flavors. This spice mix has some real heat people! Plus, it’s super versatile—I use this mix for literally anything from a nice grilled shrimp to a piece of seared salmon. For all you meat-eaters out there, it is perfect to put on top of a chicken breast or even on a pork tenderloin for a hot and spicy little kick!

    Preparation

First things first, oil your pan up real nice.

Add the onions into the hot pan and listen to those baby onions sizzle.

Let them sauté for about 7 minutes or until they turn a translucent, clear color.

Then add in those black beans and sauté everything together for about 3 minutes.

Next, transfer the onions and beans into a bowl and let cool for about 7 minutes or so or until they begin to feel room temperature.

Now, add that amazing spice mix you made before and mix it up real good for about a minute or so.

Then, add in the breadcrumbs, which serve as a binding agent to keep the burger intact.

Mash these amazing ingredients together ,similar to the way you would mash potatoes. Stop when it looks like everything has been incorporated.

Then, the burger mixture is DONE. It’s that simple. Now you just need to form patties out of the black bean mixture and heat up your pan.

    Cooking Your Burger

Grease that pan up with olive oil again.

Then, add your burger and cook for 2 minutes on both sides or until you start seeing a nice sear on that burger.

Then, you are good to go! Burger made just like that. You have made an incredibly delicious and 100% vegan burger.

Feel free to add your fave garnishes–I put swiss cheese (for the non-vegans), tomato, and arugula onto my beauty, but this burger is so versatile. You can also add toppings such as slices of avocado or tomatoes, some crumbles of cotija cheese, and if you are feeling adventurous, a little dollop of your go-to hummus on top. (My favorite is White Camel.)
