Let me begin by being honest: I first visited Cheese Daddy when its Midtown doors opened back in mid-August, and I wasn’t completely blown away. Seating was crowded, service was a bit slow and while my sandwich was good, it didn’t have that wow factor that I was hoping for. However, I recently gave the spot a second chance to please after allowing for some time for it to grow. Boy, I’m glad that I did.

Since my initial visit, Cheese Daddy has expanded its seating into the building’s common areas. While it’s still not the optimal sit-down restaurant space, you can place your order for pick-up on their website so that your meal is ready to go once you arrive. The parking situation has also greatly improved; instead of fighting other hungry Gators for a nearby parking spot, there’s free parking from 11am-5pm, Mon-Fri at St. Augustine’s parking lot across the street.

But now, let’s get down to business: similar to Subway or Chipotle, the server creates your sandwich right in front of you. Although they offer unique specialty sandwiches, such as the Smokin’ Cow or the Two Pigs, you also have the option to customize your own sandwich. The process begins as the bread is swiped across a buttery roller and ends on the grill after your selection of ingredients.

Additionally, all grilled cheese melts come with a small side of warm and creamy tomato bisque, perfect for both dipping or eating on its own. And, if you’re brave enough (I still haven’t been), you can try Cheese Daddy’s lone dessert, the grilled cheese donut.

Prices of the sandwiches range from $4-8, so it may seem a tad overpriced for what you get, but they are comparable to prices offered by competitors in the area. There are even meal options for any sandwich, which include either chips and a drink or a full cup of their tomato soup and a drink. Cheese Daddy also has a daily happy hour from 3pm-6pm when it offers $2 Plain Jane sandwiches and beer.

Pro tip: Stop by after Ladies Night, Beat the Clock, or Sake Bombs to soak up your alcohol. This place is open late Wednesday through Saturday.

Overall, Cheese Daddy has a fun college atmosphere and has already melted (cheesy pun intended) the hearts of their customers.
