Just north of Dean Keaton lies a discrete (yet colorful) taco joint, coincidently called Taco Joint. Unfortunately, after four years in Austin I only recently discovered this little gem. The moment you walk in you know you’re in a special place. A myriad of colorful sketches line the walls surrounding a few non-descript tables and an open kitchen. The smell of sizzling beef, carnitas, and crackling peppers lets you know you’re in a real taco joint.

The casual, vibrant atmosphere suggests that this is a place where true taco enthusiasts come to munch and relax. The menu is simple and diverse, offering breakfast and lunch. The beauty of each taco lies in its simplicity and authenticity. Generous portions of meat or fish are heaped onto homemade tortillas with a variety of accoutrement, ranging from your usual peppers and onions to the more imaginative Gouda cheese and honey-lime cabbage slaw.

Since it was my first time, I decided to try a surf and turf variety. The friendly woman at the counter immediately suggested the fried fish taco, and I agreed without hesitation. I wasn’t about to eat just one taco, and the Gouda cheese struck my eye, so I went for the El senior Crockett as well.

The fish taco was a simple, elegant combination of perfectly fried fish and honey-lime cabbage slaw. The slaw had an almost honey-mustard taste, which went wonderfully with the crispy fish. The fish was soft and warm, complimenting the crunch of the batter and the slaw nicely.

The El senior Crockett was a really nice surprise with tender, juicy strips and pepper. I love smoked Gouda, and I have to say I loved it even more on this taco. The smoky flavor of the cheese was a well-conceived, and ingenious addition to the classic beef fajita taco.
