What is Spoon?
Spoon University is a food website for young people that’s powered by chapters at colleges and universities around the world. We give students the training, support and resources they need to run their own food websites on their college campuses.
Nobody knows your school better than you do, so ultimately you are the voice behind your Spoon chapter. You create the content and bring Spoon to life – we just give you the support and platform to make it happen. Plus, you get to eat amazing food and get incredible mentors to help you out. What’s better than that?
What does it look like to have a Spoon chapter on your campus?
Students meet once a week to collaborate, brainstorm, try new recipes, explore local restaurants, create marketing strategies, and develop a tight-knit community on campus. Students manage their own teams and write articles for their own local food website to create the ultimate food and guide to their college campus. They also bring the campus and local community together by planning monthly community events around food. Plus, it means eating more amazing food and thinking about the impact of your Spoon chapter on the community… Prepare yourself for Insta likes, major recognition on campus, and a dope community of passionate humans to help you out.
Why is this awesome? Countless reasons, really.
Your work can be seen by millions of people around the world. From our Facebook presence to our amazing partners, these bylines are both professional and will get you major cred with your friends and acquaintances.
You get access to online training that covers how media actually works today, and we hook you up with professional strategists and consultants to help make your work better than ever before.
You become a member of a network of more than 5,000 students, with alumni working at places like BuzzFeed, Time Inc, Food Network, FoodBeast, Food & Wine, Lucky Peach and more. Those perks, though…
How do I start a chapter?
The next cohort of chapters will be launching in Fall 2016. Launching a chapter takes a couple of steps, so make like Missy Elliot and let’s do this thing together.
Double check to be sure we’re not already at your school.
- Prove demand. You will pick one week to get enough students to sign an online petition (every school in our network has successfully done this so far!).
- Collect Applications. You need to recruit strong leaders (Editorial Director, Community Manager and Social Media Manager) and start building the team. You can but are not required to apply for leadership.
- Complete the training and prepare for the launch. Once leadership and teams are selected, they go through an interactive training, set their first official chapter meeting and start creating content to take their website live!
