There’s only so far Stacy’s Pita Chips and Hummus can go. Sure, you can vary the type of hummus but in the end, it’s a little too predictable. I love to have these Wontons (a.k.a “Tequeños” in Spanish) for a snack or as an appetizer platter when my friends are over. Dipped in guac or any other sauce you’d like, these cheesy wontons are amazing and filling. So ditch the pita chips and introduce some South America into your life. It’s anything but predictable.

Easy

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Servings: 8

Ingredients:
1 Queso Fresco pack, found at Whole Foods in the cold cheese section
1 wonton dough pack, found at Whole Foods right next to the cheese
Vegetable oil as needed, or sunflower seed oil (do not use olive oil as substitute)

Directions:

1. Place as many slices of the wonton dough as you can on a baking dish or cutting board.

2. Slice the cheese into roughly 1.5 inch pieces that are about as thick as your fingers.
3. Place one piece of cheese at the center of the Wonton dough.
Tip: You know the cheese is the right size if you have about a finger of space on the top and on the bottom. You want to make sure the dough can close over the cheese.

4. With a wet finger, line the edges of the dough so they become moist and can stick together easily.
5. Fold each side over the cheese tightly, one over the other.6. Press the top fold down and bring in each corner. Fold the bottom in the same way. Do this for each wonton piece.

7.  Once all your Wontons are filled with cheese and closed properly, add a tablespoon of oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Place cheese-filled Wontons to the skillet and turn over when browning. Make sure both sides are brown and crispy.

8. Remove from skillet and keep warm.
Tip: Place the Wontons on a plate covered with paper towel before serving to soak up excess oil.
9. Repeat steps until you have a sizable batch of wontons. Remember to add more more oil to the skillet each time.
10. Serve these “Tequeños” with guac for the perfect party platter or a delicious snack!

Tip: It’s fine to do these ahead of time. To serve the day after, drizzle with a bit of vegetable oil before heating in the microwave or oven.
