Cà phê sữa đá literally translates to “coffee milk ice.” A common menu item in most Vietnamese restaurants, this coffee is different than any that you’ve had before. Sure you can get a nice latte or frappuccino from Starbucks, but you probably can’t replicate that at home unless you’ve got all the fancy expensive equipment they’ve got at the store. One of the reasons cà phê sữa đá is so good is because it has a really concentrated flavor of coffee. Where you’d usually find cream and sugar in your coffee, cà phê sữa đá uses condensed milk in order to add that extra layer of richness.

You won’t be needing anything fancy to make this Vietnamese staple – no whipped cream, no fancy equipment, nothing you wouldn’t find in your everyday grocery store. What you get is an unadulterated coffee made simply with a quality dark coffee and rich condensed milk. Cà phê sữa đá is simple to make and will only lead to an addiction to coffee if you haven’t already developed one.
