In a world filled with Starbucks, coffee shops have become less of a hip and trendy place to hang out, and more of a mainstream staple. That’s where Grand River Coffee comes in. Located just a block down Grand River Ave past Michigan Ave, Grand River Coffee is tucked in among some of East Lansing’s most charming homes.

Upon entering the cafe, I was greeted by a glass waterfall divider and large, open dining area with plenty of comfortable seating.

Unlike many Starbucks establishments I have visited, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Professors gather with students, parents sit catching up with their kids, and friends gather for casual conversation and delicious food.

Grand River Coffee’s menu offers six daily brews, a variety of monthly coffee specials, baked goods, sandwiches, smoothies, and fourteen flavors of gelato. Coffee is served in mugs for those of us who plan to stay awhile.

My first trip to the cafe consisted of The Steve, a hazelnut and caramel espresso concoction for those with a sweet tooth, a cannoli to rival those of my Nona’s kitchen, and a cup of crisp Stracciatella gelato (basically cookies & cream flavor). It was a dessert lover’s dream, and no part of it was a disappointment.

Undoubtedly my favorite part of my experience at Grand River Coffee was the adorable antique book store that is attached to the cafe.

Archives Book Shop is everything you could want in a coffee shop book store. From Tolstoy’s classics to Harry Potter, the quaint little shop contains a lot of history, including some very old and intricate copies of The Bible and Websters Dictionary. It is a fun place to explore after a coffee date or a relaxing way to take a quick study break.

With friendly service, a cozy atmosphere, and great food, Grand River Coffee brings authenticity and warmth to the coffee shop experiences. So whether you’re searching for a great place to study, go on a friendly date, or just grab a great cup of coffee, Grand River Coffee should be on the top of your list.
