Although Barcelona is well-known for tapas, it’s also one of the most eclectic and exciting places to eat on this planet. Whether you’re deciding where to vacation next or choosing a destination for your semester abroad, I recommend this oceanside city for amazing eats and sights. The people of Barcelona are not early risers (probably because of the amazing nightlife) and breakfast is always brunch. And let me tell you, Barcelona does brunch well.

1. Milk Bar and Bistro

Whether you’re exhausted from the walking tours of the Sagrada Familia or from a crazy night at Ice Bar, Milk Bar and Bistro is just what you need. They call it “The Recovery Brunch,” and it’s served from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day of the week. This brunch spot has everything from zesty huevos rancheros to fresh fruit, greek yogurt, toasted nuts, and organic granola. They also have a great variety of freshly blended fruit and kale smoothies.

#SpoonTip: Start off your brunch with, mimosas, the house specialty!

2. Federal Cafe

Drink a coffee in the garden and imagine you’re on the Binna Burra Road. This trendy, Aussie hot spot is home to delicious avocado toast and incredible eggs florentine. Their healthier options pack in just as much flavor. Try the poached eggs with smoked salmon and a side of spinach and that will power you through your day. Brunching on the later side? Try their crunchy fish and chips or order a slice of the sinful carrot cake and #treatyoself.

3. Brunch & Cake

Salad for breakfast? Pancakes for dinner? Here, anything is possible. All the ingredients are fresh and delicious so that something as simple as brunch can be the best. Big portions, a lovely interior, and great service. What more could you want?

Brunch & Cake isn’t just a trendy location for Instagrams, their food is actually amazing. One best-seller is the eggs Benedict on top of their scrumptious waffles! Their talented baristas also make amazing almond milk lattes and cappuccinos.

4. Cup & Cake

Owned by the same people as Brunch & Cake, this bakery is a fantastic spot to sip a soy chai latte while nomming on the endless variety of pastries. They don’t only sell cake, either. Every plate has personality. And who wouldn’t want a syringe of guacamole to top their sandwich? Cup and Cake is quaint and cozy and also dog friendly! The refreshing and gorgeous acai bowl is a perfect midday snack. The aesthetics of the entire restaurant will have you planning the interior of your first house.

5. Picnic

Picnic is another awesome Barcelona breakfast location. This menu is the most traditional spanish cuisine on this list. It has many different types of tapas including Tapas Pancakes and Fried Green Tomatoes, which are both killer.

Picnic also offers a prix fixe brunch menu which includes one starter, one main meal, one dessert, wine or beer, AND coffee. I’m not sure prix fixe menus get much better than Picnic’s! Be sure to try the fresh crab Benedict or the duck hash. The atmosphere and service are also reasons for you to put this on your list!

6. Candende

Located right by the University, this brunch spot is another great start to your day. This one’s a little more laid back and relaxed yet still innovative and adventurous with flavors. Daily specials like the pulled pork eggs Benedict and fluffy flapjacks topped with berry compote keep customers lining up at the door on weekends.
