To say I enjoy tacos is an understatement. They excite me —revive me even— and always seem to put me in the best mood. That’s why tacos make an excellent lunch, because we all need a mid-day meal that refuels us and gives us enough energy to finish out the day. They’re also quick to eat, hardly get boring with a plethora of fillings, and don’t hurt the purse strings either. Now that I’ve officially convinced you that you need to start eating tacos for lunch, let me tell you where.

Tacos Don Memo, newly located on 38th and Walnut, should and (once you’ve tasted them) will be your on campus taco destination. Choose among steak, chicken or two types of pork as fillings, and get ready to be handed piping hot double stacked corn tortillas filled with your selection and a generous amount of avocado and sauce. What I love most about these little babies, is their seasoning. The meats are well marinated and well spiced, allowing you to taste their pungent flavor that’s able to peek through and even enhance the toppings.

While I’ve tried them all, the carnita filling, or crispy pork, kind of speaks to me. It’s crispness melds with the sweet creaminess of the avocado and builds a flavor marriage that must have been blessed by the gods. The marinated pork is also a winner, as it’s meltingly tender and tastes as if it’s been just simmering and softening until it found you to eat it. Pork, as it usually does, takes the prize.

A squeeze of a fresh lime wedge and flecks of cilantro add a bit of zest that brightens up each mouthful. The sprinkling of raw white onions adds a bit of a kick and crunch to the finish, making for a balanced bite. If you need a break from the tacos, try the gargantuan burrito, quesadillas or the tostada sandwiches. The key to Don Memo’s continued delicious delivery is in their base products, so whatever you get, you’ll find yourself enjoying.
