When a friend brought me a chocolaty treat from Spain over Spring Break, I immediately wanted to know more. What am I missing here in the U.S? What international sugary goodness is hiding overseas? Luckily, Amazon Prime comes in pretty clutch when answering these questions.
With a couple of easy clicks, I got myself an international snack box from BoCandy shipped right to my dorm. This company creates surprise treat boxes with candies from around the globe. When it arrived, I could literally smell the sweets and couldn't wait to try them. Here's my thoughts on the international snacks I tried:
Filipinos- Spain:
My inspiration, my muse. When I got this pack of cookies as a gift I couldn't wait to try it. From the wrapper, they looked something like those little chocolate covered doughnuts your grandma picks up from the supermarket.
When you open them up, they are NOTHING like the doughnut reference. These are tiny little biscuit rings covered in smooth dark chocolate with a lot of crunch. The package suggests throwing them in the fridge before eating and this method does not disappoint.
Choco-Freta-Greece:
Milk chocolate covered wafer? Sounds good to me. Even the package looks appetizing. Looks somewhat like one giant Kit-Kat and to me, that's a win.
Oh oh oh oh it's international love..these are DELICIOUS. The Greeks can do sweets, and do it well. This one is made of thin, crisp wafers layered with an almond paste and covered in creamy milk chocolate.
Zozole Musss-Poland
Honestly not quite sure what's going on with this one but the little cartoon on the package looks trustworthy and I'm thinking this is some type of cola flavored hard candy based on the pictures...
This was WAY unexpected. While I was right about the cola flavor, these are not your average hard candy. The center is a fizzy, carbonated filling that pours out the sides and just explodes in your mouth. Its like those root-beer barrels and Pop Rocks combined.
Medenki Choco Pause-Bulgaria:
This treat from Bulgaria looks a little something like the Scooter Pies you would trade your Gushers for at lunch. After searching the ingredients in several different languages, I discovered that this is a honey cake with cinnamon and a chocolate coating.
I'm going to have to pass on this one. Something about it is just a little off. It reminds me somewhat of a gingerbread cookie but with a spongy texture. Not even chocolate coating can save this one for me.
Puchao-Japan
When I opened the BoCandy Box I could immediately smell these babies, which reminded me of the strawberry flavored Hubba-Bubba gum.
I don't really have anything bad to say about these striped sweets. These chewy candies have a familiar strawberries and cream flavor that gives me serious nostalgia. The texture is taffy like and reminds me of summers at the Jersey Shore.
Prestige Cake Bars-Greece
I have no idea what milk cream is, but not gonna lie, this one looks pretty good...hoping for Mallomar like goodness inside.
This literally tastes like a slice of birthday cake-yellow cake, cream filling, and chocolate icing. Wouldn't have expected this but I like the idea of portable cake, Bring these bad boys to the U.S.
Pikolo and Kasugai- Poland and Japan
These candies were scattered loose in the bottom of the box like an added bonus. The gummies are from Japan and the hard candies are from Poland. Both make me think of a bowl you grab from when leaving a restaurant.
The gummy was way better than expected. Its like a honeydew flavored gummy bear which should definitely be a regular flavor. The hard candies are actually really good. They are tiny and sour. At first the apple kind of tasted like a pickle... but the orange is awesome.
Overall, the Bo-Candy international snack box was a great purchase. While not every snack in there was for me, it was definitely a cool experience to be able to try sweets from around the world. Some of these products were similar to American-made candies, but every country has their own sweet (or sour) spin on things.
