October 24th is National Food Day, and what better way to celebrate than with pie? A local Bloomington food pantry, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, hosted a free Pie Fest for the public to do just that.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard focuses on trying to increase access to healthy food for everyone, all while keeping dignity, self-sufficiency and community in mind.

Their Pie Fest included a pie potluck for sampling. The pies ranged from your traditional apple pie to some more out-there like options like Oreo s’mores.

Along with the pie tasting, there were also demonstrations on how to make amazing apple pies.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard has a whole Nutrition Education Program, which goes beyond cooking classes on how to make healthy meals at home. The program also includes information about how to buy nutritious food on a budget and gardening workshops.

This isn’t your typical food pantry. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard does way more by striving to supply healthy food to the whole Bloomington community all while trying to minimize waste and maintain sustainability.

And they can throw a pretty mean Pie Fest.
