I’m quite the snacker. However, being busy and stressed turns me into a snack MONSTER. It’s officially finals szn, which means those cravings are ready to take over your innocent little body. These cravings are responsible for why we’re drawn to Ben & Jerry’s and Flavor-Blasted Goldfish, and away from fresh fruits and veggies.

Show your cravings who’s boss during finals this year with the following tips, courtesy of my nutritionist mother (HI MOM). Don’t forget to treat yo’ self every once in awhile, you probably earned it.

1. Banish Hunger

Skipping meals is a huuuuuge no-no. Although it may seem like an awesome way to cut calories, it sets you up for intense cravings later in the day. Having healthy and hearty meals is especially important before taking a final. #BrainFood

2. Get Hydrated

Water should be your BFF. When feelin’ snacky, try drinking a glass of water or cup of tea to stop your dirty thoughts about ice cream.

3. Identify Triggers

What gets you going? Pay attention to what drives you toward the candy or french fries. Tired? Angry? Anxious? Once you recognize your triggers, you’ll be able to avoid eating that bag of chips.

4. Ditch Deprivation

Don’t go cold turkey on your fave foods (even if it’s actually cold turkey). Your favorite foods love you just as much as you love them. Don’t be afraid to occasionally indulge. Constantly avoiding a food you love will surely lead you to strong cravings, especially when stress hits.

5. When In Doubt, Wait It Out

You are most susceptible to eat 20 minutes after a stressful event. It has to do with some chemical sh*t in your brain. Science, man. Get yourself away from the food or drink a glass of water. As time passes, the cravings will too.

6. Chew It Away

GUM IS GOOD. Chew chew nom nom nom. Gum chewers tend to have much lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone that leads to more cravings). Keeping gum around will keep your mouth busy and give you flavors to keep cravings away.

7. See The Lighter Side

Even though snacking makes you very happy, you’ll survive without it. Laughing and having fun cuts stress by releasing feel good endorphins. Socializing will also keep you busy and your mind focused on things other than snacking.

IT’S FINALS SZN, GOOD LUCK & THE PAIN WILL BE OVER SOON.
