Rice is a staple dish in many households and cultures, but a college apartment can be a whole other story. Not everyone can afford a rice cooker in college, but the good news is you really don’t even need one. Cooking rice on the stove takes the same amount of time as a rice cooker and requires only a few extra steps. Besides, making rice the old-fashioned way kind of tastes better too.
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 24 minutes
Total Time: 26 minutes
1 1/3 cups water
1 cup basmati rice
Pinch of salt
1/4 tablespoon butter (optional)
1. Rinse the rice at least three times: add the dry rice to a bowl and fill it with water while using your hands to gently move the rice around. Carefully pour out the cloudy water, making sure not to pour out the rice too. Repeat until the water is no longer cloudy.
Tip: This cleans the rice and takes away any extra starch that will make the rice too sticky when cooked.
2. Drain the rice of water and add it to the cooking pot.
3. Add the 1 1/3 cups water to the pot over medium-high heat, and sprinkle salt on top.
4. When the rice begins to boil (about 4 minutes), turn the heat down so that the water is simmering on low heat.
5. Cover the pot and cook for 20 minutes. Be sure not to open the pot at any point during this time.
6. When done cooking, fluff rice with a fork and add in butter (optional).
