One of the best things about food is experimenting with it. There are times when we mix things together that result in failure. However, when we achieve an amazing food combination, nothing is ever the same again — even when it’s bizarre. I asked my friends some of their “weird” food habits and ended up with this list.

1. Doritos and Dip

There are plenty of people who enjoy dunking their food into dip, and even more who enjoy eating Doritos. I never liked Cool Ranch Doritos until I combined them with Heluva Good! French Onion dip. The sour cream-based dip neutralizes the intense and tangy flavors of the Doritos. Try mixing different flavors of Doritos with your own homemade dips.

2. Goldfish and Strawberry Yogurt

Yogurt is known for having a fairly plain taste and a smooth texture. Goldfish are crunchy. When you mix the two together, there is a perfect combination of salty and sweet.

3. Grilled Cheese with Nutella and Mayo

bread, waffle, cheese
Alex Frank

Believe me, I know how bizarre it sounds. However, my friend swears by this mixture. The Nutella and mayo add an unexpected, yet delicious flavor to the classic sandwich. The sweetness of the Nutella balances out the saltiness of the mayo. If this is a little too adventurous for you, check out this safer option.

4. French Fries with a Milkshake

I first tried this combination when my softball team stopped at a fast food joint after a game. Similar to the combinations above, the reason this tastes so good is because of the balance between salty and sweet. There’s just something about warm fries drenched in a frozen drink. If you’re looking for something besides the standard vanilla shake, these recipes may be useful for you.

5. Pickles in Macaroni and Cheese

Two classic foods combined together in an amazing way. Tossing pickles in to this dish adds an extra level of texture that you wouldn’t normally get from the cheesy pasta alone.

6. Popcorn with Marshmallows

Julia Gilman

There are so many different varieties of popcorn that can be consumed in numerous ways. After you’ve popped a fresh bag, throw some marshmallows in there. The heat will cause the two foods to bind together, which results in the marshmallows melting. In the end, you’re left with a fluff-like mixture that pairs well with the saltiness of the popcorn. If you’re looking for other ways to make gourmet popcorn, check this out.

7. PB&J Sandwich with Chips

Caroline Ingalls

The all-American sandwich gets a makeover when you top it off with chips. The savory, sweet, and salty flavors work together like magic, leaving you with an unforgettable taste.

8. Chocolate Chip Cookies and Bacon

Brooke Buchan

My roomie will not stop talking about how great these cookies are. The bacon adds a smokey flavor to the typically sweet treat. If the bacon is crunchy, it adds a little something extra to the soft cookie. Try this recipe if you’re interested in making a batch of your own.

9. Cream Cheese and Jelly

jam, toast, sweet, bread
David Lifson

Ever since I was a kid, my mom would make me these sandwiches. The cream cheese is sweet, but it isn’t overwhelming. The jelly works in contrast, adding even more sweetness and flavor.

10. Saltines and Honey

sweet, dairy product, pastry, cheese, wheat, bread, cracker
Marilyn Naron

Saltine crackers are about as boring as a food can be. If you’re looking for a cheap snack, pick up some of these crackers and honey. Put a dab of honey on top of the crackers in order to add a bit of sweetness.
