The Runcible Spoon, often called Spoon by the locals, is arguably the best brunch spot in Bloomington, Indiana. They are a self-proclaimed “cozy hideaway” in the heart of Bloomington’s downtown district. Catering to the college crowd and relying on word of mouth for publicity, they’ve been offering up breakfast favorites since 1976. In addition to mouthwateringly good brunch, served all day, Runcible Spoon is home to Bloomington’s only coffee roasting business. Customers can buy coffee and tea by the cup or by the pound here.

Like many of the restaurants in downtown Bloomington, Runcible Spoon is located in what was once a residential house, creating a homey, cottage-like atmosphere that draws students in by the bucketload. Beware, Saturday and Sunday mornings are, not surprisingly, the busiest days and there is often a short, but worthwhile wait.

It may come as a surprise, but Runcible Spoon has more than one claim to fame. Featured on the Travel Channel, Runcible Spoon gained recognition for, at one point, having one of the top ten, coolest bathrooms in the WORLD. On my first visit to Spoon I was urged to take a peek and I was pleasantly surprised by the fish-filled WC.

Now let’s get down to what you’ve been waiting for: what to get. While there is something for everyone on the menu, Spoon’s pancakes simply cannot be beat in Bloomington. Plain, chocolate chip, strawberry or banana, cinnamon, they’re all to-die-for. Seriously. You’ll be so full after eating them that you could literally explode with warm, syrupy goodness. Not a pancake fan? Try their Bonne Femme Omelette, the french toast or the biscuits and gravy.

Even if you’re not a “breakfast eater,” head on over to Runcible Spoon. You absolutely cannot miss out on the mimosas or Guinness and orange juice drinks that Spoon serves daily.

Still not sure what to order? Take a look at their breakfast menu before heading over.

Pro-tip: Runcible Spoon has two menus. They give out the streamlined version on busy brunch days like Saturday and Sunday to cut down on production time. They also serve dinner, in addition to breakfast, from 5pm to 10pm. Go on an off-time to get the full version of the menu and experience the true glory that is The Runcible Spoon.
